Rural Industrialization and Enterprise Development (RIED) Our efforts for RIED is directed towards addressing rural unemployment and underemployment and consequently averting the phenomenon of urban migration. Besides, it shall serve to the objective of reducing and eliminating rural poverty. The growth of existing rural industries and enterprises, and also the emergence of those producing new commodities will be stimulated by the rise in agricultural incomes and the purchasing power of the market. Increased incomes could be attained mainly through; high agricultural growth rates, rising labour productivities and, agrarian reform . Since majority of the rural population comes from the agri-sector, RIED will be largely based on agricultural productivity. Downstream people’s industries will be established to give value added to the products produced by the MRSP. With these initiatives, the process of democratization of the industrial ownership in the rural areas will be set in motion. Claim-taking and policy reform struggles shall be continued to impel the government at providing the support services and the favorable policy environment for the development of rural industries and enterprises. Even where the financial resources are made available, indigenous entrepreneurs are not emerging because potential entrepreneurship is not cultivated and nurtured. In order to break the imbalance of industrial and enterprise ownership in the rural areas, an entrepreneurship program at the grassroots level shall be implemented without let up. The development and propagation of alternative and appropriate technologies available for various industries is very essential. Preference shall be on technologies with products that are seen to have a high income elasticity of demand, labour intensive and ecologically sustainable. |
